The Next Golden Bachelor Sounds Like A Real Douchebag

No judgment toward anyone who enjoys The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, or the whole Golden spin-off franchise—but it’s just not for me. There’s always been something icky about watching a crowd of women (or men) compete for one person’s attention. Every now and then, I’ll catch a few minutes if I’m too lazy to reach for the remote, but otherwise, hard pass.

So imagine my face when I was phone scrolling and stumbled on an article about how Mel Owens, age 66, and the newest Golden Bachelor has announced that he would “be cutting” any women over the age of 60 and preferred women between the ages of 45 to 60 who are fit and sans artificial hips and artificial hair.

OMG! Have men ever considered sometimes just shutting the f*ck up?

I’m going to speak for myself, but I think the takeaway here is that some men don’t ever age out of being a douchebag. Because wow. What a piece of work that guy is. It’s hard to comprehend how that walking commercial for new teeth and HairClub for men has a problem with artificial anything.

I’m not sure where to even go with the rest of this but let’s start with how that sexist, ageist ass is giving off small dick energy and then go right to the sheer stupidity of “cutting” women over a certain age and missing out on their intelligence, beauty, wisdom and depth. (Not that women under age 60 don’t have those things, but let’s be real, age adds layers.) Men who can't appreciate women their age and demand younger “fitter” partners are nothing more than elderly frat boys with AARP cards and fragile egos.

Lastly, I’m not letting ABC off the hook for choosing this embarrassing, poor representation of men. I’m side-eyeing whatever executive producer heard these things and decided to move forward with this dude. Clearly, they’re chasing ratings at the expense of dignity. And honestly, I’d love to know if any women who work on this show choose not to stay silent about it.

If it had one wish, it would be that they cast real, smart, successful, independent women between 60 and 70 and allow them to interact with Mel unscripted. Let them say exactly what they think—and let him squirm in real time. THAT would be must-see TV.
