Denim Fatigue is Real: Why I’m Officially Off the Trend Cycle
When it comes to jeans, I’ve spent half a century watching the pendulum swing back and forth - from skinny jeans to wide-leg. From acid washed to dark washed. From low waist to high waist. I’ve been through the baggy, the boyfriend, the bootcut, and everything in between, and as a 60-year-old woman, I’m officially calling it: I’m sick of this sh*t, and I’m going to wear what I want. If it’s out of style, whatever.
My jeans transition days are officially over. The constant pressure to overhaul my closet to match the latest leg width is legitimately crazy.
I’m taking a lifetime hiatus from trends and jumping off the fashion hamster wheel. If that means I’m wearing outdated skinny jeans while everyone else is rocking oversized denim, so be it. And if it means I’m living in my favorite boyfriend pair while the fashion influencers are shouting about something else being the next big thing, I’m fine with that too.
There’s a big difference between fashion (the trends dictated by the industry) and style (what makes you look like you). Style is personal, enduring, and - most importantly - comfortable. When we stop trying to keep up with the industry's impossible pace, we have the freedom to build a wardrobe that fits our lives, our bodies, and our actual preferences.
So, to anyone else feeling the fatigue: Take this as your permission slip. Wear the jeans that make you feel like you. Ignore the headlines, mute the trend-watchers, and choose what you like.
It feels a lot better than constantly trying to catch up to a moving goalpost.
Are you feeling the denim fatigue, or are you still enjoying the ride of current trends? Let me know in the comments—or don't, because I'm probably too busy being comfortable in my favorite jeans to check.
